Challenges

The ILDS method of course delivery is very effective, but it takes a considerable longer period of time to develop the course content compared to traditional learning delivery systems (both face to face and distance). The challenge for curriculum developers is to stimulate the learner to use the material while they are learning. Learning is not a passive process, and traditional lecture style and textbook style delivery techniques are quite ineffective in promoting anything more than an orientation to the content, competence gained as a result of participating in these traditional delivery methods is low at best and often not at all.

The second challenge with the ILDS method of delivering content is that the learner is not used to working with the material while learning, thus it will take a considerable amount of effort on the learners part to become competent rather than just familiar with the content. Most people do not become competent with material until they are using it in life, such as work skills. There will need to be a mind shift of learners to put the work into learning prior to using it in life so that they will be ready to use it in life. Presently there are significant ineffeciencies and errors made in life as a result of incompetence. One of the goals of the ILDS is to reduce the errors in life by allowing the learner to make the errors in a safe practice environment, and this is done through scenario learning.

The third challenge with the ILDS is the technology itself. All delivery systems need to be user friendly, flashy enough to maintain interest but not so much that they become entertaining. Being entertained requires little mental effort, and thus learning is not likely to occur. Learner interest however is critical. The challenge here is to develop technology that can be used by anyone anywhere and maintain the learner interest.

Watch

ILDS have taken all three challenges above and developed a learning delivery system that works. There are still challenges with the technology, for instance using streaming video files that can be delivered in a timely fashion over the internet.
